How SAT Math scoring works

The calculator above does one job: it turns the number of questions you got right into an estimated score on the 200–800 scale. To trust that number — and to know what to do about it — it helps to understand what's happening underneath.

The Digital SAT Math section has 44 questions split into two modules of 22. You get 35 minutes for each module, 70 minutes in total. The first module is the same mix of easy, medium, and hard questions for everyone. The second module is adaptive: how you do on Module 1 decides whether you're routed to a harder or an easier Module 2. That routing matters more than most students realize, because the harder second module is the only path that unlocks the very top of the score range.

Raw score vs. scaled score

These two numbers get confused constantly, so it's worth being precise.

Your raw score is the number of questions you answered correctly — a whole number from 0 to 44. It's what you'd count if you graded your own practice test by hand.

Your scaled score is that raw count converted onto the familiar 200–800 range. College Board applies a process called equating to do this. Equating adjusts for small differences in difficulty between test forms and between the two adaptive paths, so that a 700 on one test means the same thing as a 700 on another. Because of the adaptive routing, there is no single fixed conversion table — the same raw score can map to slightly different scaled scores depending on which Module 2 you saw. What different scores look like

Concrete examples make the scale easier to read. These are approximate — the exact conversion shifts by test form — but they show the shape of the curve:

  • 44 correct → 800. A perfect raw score. On most forms you need every question right, though a rare form forgives a single miss.
  • ~37 correct → ~700. You can miss roughly 6–8 questions and still reach 700, which is about the 90th percentile.
  • ~30 correct → ~600. Comfortably above the national average and competitive at many state universities.

Notice how the points-per-question value isn't flat. Near the middle of the scale, one extra correct answer might be worth 10–20 scaled points; at the very top, the gaps compress and each additional question matters more for pushing into 700+ territory. How to improve your score

Once you know your estimated score, the useful question is how to move it. The fastest gains almost always come from two places.

First, eliminate careless errors. Misreading the question, arithmetic slips, and answering for the wrong variable are points you already know how to earn — you just lost them. Review every wrong answer on a practice test and sort it into a category: careless mistake, knowledge gap, or ran out of time. Each needs a different fix, and the careless pile is the cheapest to clear.

Second, spend your study time where the questions are. Algebra and Advanced Math together make up about 70% of the section, so mastering those two domains returns far more points per hour than polishing Geometry. Work through targeted practice questions in your weakest domain until your accuracy is consistently above 80%, then move to the next weakest.

Wrap both habits inside a realistic testing loop. A few myths trip up students every year. Clearing them up will save you points and stress.

  • "There's one official conversion chart." There isn't. The adaptive format means the raw-to-scaled mapping varies by form and module path. Any calculator, including this one, gives a range-based estimate.
  • "Guessing can hurt me." It can't. With no wrong-answer penalty, a blank is strictly worse than a guess. Fill in an answer for every single question.
  • "Module 2 is where the real scoring happens, so Module 1 is a warm-up." The opposite is closer to true. Module 1 decides which Module 2 you get, and therefore your score ceiling. Treat those first 22 questions as the highest-stakes part of the section.
