The structure of the Math section
The Digital SAT Math section contains 44 questions split across two modules of 22 questions each. You get 35 minutes per module, 70 minutes total. Most questions are multiple choice, but some are "student-produced response" (grid-in) questions where you type the answer yourself. The four content domains are weighted unevenly. Algebra and Advanced Math together make up roughly 70% of the questions; Geometry & Trigonometry and Problem-Solving & Data Analysis make up the rest. That weighting is the single most important fact for planning your study time — which we return to below.
How the adaptive modules work
This is the biggest change from the old paper SAT, and it's what makes scoring feel mysterious. The test is multistage adaptive:
- Module 1 is a mix of easy, medium, and hard questions. Everyone sees the same difficulty spread.
- Module 2 adapts to how you did on Module 1. Perform well and you're routed to a harder second module; struggle and you get an easier one.
Here's the crucial consequence: the harder Module 2 unlocks the top of the score range. If you're routed to the easier second module, your score is capped below the maximum no matter how many you get right. This is why Module 1 carries outsized weight — it decides which scoring track you land on.

Treat every Module 1 question as high-stakes. Accuracy early determines your ceiling. It's the opposite of the old advice to "save the hard ones for last across the whole test" — here, the first module gates everything after it.
From raw score to scaled score
Your raw score is simply the number of questions you answered correctly — there's no penalty for wrong answers, so you should never leave a question blank. That raw count is then converted to the familiar 200–800 scaled score through a process called equating.
Equating adjusts for small differences in difficulty between test versions and between the adaptive tracks, so that a given scaled score means the same thing regardless of which specific test you took. Because of the adaptive routing, there's no single fixed table — the same number of correct answers can map to different scaled scores depending on which Module 2 you saw.
No wrong-answer penalty
Every blank is a guaranteed zero; every guess has a chance of being right. With five-choice questions, always eliminate what you can and guess. On grid-ins, put down your best attempt. Never leave anything empty — this is free expected points.
What counts as a good score
"Good" depends entirely on where you're applying, but some rough anchors help you set a target:
- Around 500 is near the national median for the Math section.
- 600+ puts you comfortably above average and competitive at many state universities.
- 700+ is in the top tier and expected at selective schools.
- 750–800 is the range for the most competitive programs, where math-heavy majors scrutinize this section closely.

What this means for your prep
Three concrete strategies fall directly out of how the scoring works:
- Front-load accuracy. Because Module 1 gates your ceiling, build reliability on easy and medium questions before chasing the hardest ones. A careless mistake early costs more than a missed hard question late.
- Spend your time where the questions are. Algebra and Advanced Math are ~70% of the section. Master those two domains first — the point-per-hour return is far higher than polishing Geometry.
- Never leave a blank. With no guessing penalty, an unanswered question is strictly worse than a guess. Budget your time so you at least mark something for every item.
