I've taught SAT math long enough to have coached students through both the old paper test and the new Digital SAT, and the single biggest mistake I see now is students preparing as if nothing changed. Plenty changed. The Digital SAT rewards different habits, punishes different weaknesses, and gives you tools the old test never did. This guide walks through the whole math section the way I'd explain it to a student sitting across the table from me on day one.
The format at a glance
The math section has 44 questions split into two modules of 22. You get 35 minutes per module, so 70 minutes total. When Module 1's clock runs out, the test moves you to Module 2 automatically — you can't bank leftover time or go back. Within a module you can flag questions and jump around freely, which is a genuinely useful feature I'll come back to.
Roughly three-quarters of the questions are multiple choice with four options. The rest are grid-ins, where you type your own answer instead of picking one. There's no wrong-answer penalty anywhere on the test, which has a simple consequence you should tattoo on your brain: never leave anything blank.
The one-sentence summary
44 questions, two 35-minute modules, calculator allowed throughout, no penalty for guessing, and the second module's difficulty depends on how you did on the first.
How the adaptive modules work
This is the part that trips people up, so let's be precise. The test is multistage adaptive, which is not the same as question-by-question adaptive. It works in two stages:
- Module 1 is the same difficulty mix for everyone — a blend of easy, medium, and hard questions.
- Module 2 comes in two versions. Do well on Module 1 and you're routed to the harder version; struggle and you get the easier one.
Here's why this matters more than any single content topic: the easier Module 2 caps your score. If you land on that track, there's a ceiling — often around the mid-600s — that you cannot break through no matter how many questions you get right. The harder Module 2 is what unlocks scores in the 700s and 800s.
So Module 1 is not just "the first half." It's the gate that decides which scoring track you're on. A careless mistake on an easy Module 1 question can cost you far more than missing a genuinely hard question later, because it can be the difference between the two tracks.
What this changes about your strategy
Treat every Module 1 question as high-stakes, especially the easy and medium ones. Slow down enough to be accurate early. You can read the full breakdown in the guide on how SAT math scoring works.
The four content domains
College Board organizes math into four domains, and they are not equally weighted. Knowing the split tells you exactly where to spend your prep time.
Algebra (~35%)
The biggest slice. Linear equations, linear inequalities, systems of two equations, and word problems that hide a line inside them. If you're weak here, fix it first — it's the highest-leverage domain on the whole test. Start with the guide on solving linear equations.
Advanced Math (~35%)
Nearly as large. Quadratics, exponential functions, polynomials, function notation, and nonlinear systems. This is where students hunting for a 700+ win or lose points. The guide on mastering quadratic equations covers the core of it.
Problem-Solving & Data Analysis (~15%)
Ratios, percentages, unit conversion, probability, reading graphs and tables, mean/median/mode, and standard deviation (conceptually — you won't compute it by hand). These questions are usually not hard mathematically; they're hard because they bury one number in a paragraph of context.
Geometry & Trigonometry (~15%)
Angles, triangles, circles, area and volume, right-triangle trig (SOH-CAH-TOA), and the unit circle basics. Many formulas are provided on a reference sheet, but some are not. See SAT geometry formulas explained for which is which.
The weighting is your study plan
Algebra and Advanced Math together are about 70% of the section. If you have limited time, master those two before you touch geometry. The point-per-hour return is simply higher.
The built-in Desmos calculator
Every question on the Digital SAT allows a calculator, and the test ships with the Desmos graphing calculator built right into the interface. This is genuinely powerful, and most students use maybe 10% of what it can do.
Desmos will solve equations graphically, find intersection points of two lines or curves, locate the vertex and roots of a parabola, and evaluate expressions instantly. On a well-chosen question, it turns a two-minute algebra grind into a ten-second graph.
A question asks for the positive solution to x² − 3x − 10 = 0.
The slow way: factor into (x − 5)(x + 2) = 0, so x = 5 or x = −2, take the positive: x = 5.
The Desmos way: type y = x² − 3x − 10, look at where the curve crosses the x-axis. Desmos labels the points: (−2, 0) and (5, 0). The positive root is 5. No factoring, no errors.
Desmos won't help on every question — plenty are conceptual or algebraic in a way graphing can't shortcut — but knowing when to reach for it is a real skill. I put together a full Desmos guide for the SAT that walks through every high-value move.
Grid-in questions
About a quarter of the section is student-produced response, meaning you type the answer yourself. A few rules save careless students real points here:
- Answers can be positive numbers, zero, or positive fractions/decimals. On the Digital SAT, negative answers are allowed — the field accepts a minus sign.
- If your answer is a fraction that fits, you can enter it as a fraction; you don't have to convert to a decimal.
- For long decimals, enter as many digits as fit in the box. Don't round early — round only at the very end, and only if you must.
- If a question has more than one correct answer (some do), entering any one of them earns the point.
Common grid-in mistake
Rounding 2/3 to 0.66. That's marked wrong. Enter 2/3, or use enough decimal places (.666 or .667) to fill the box. When in doubt, enter the fraction.
Timing and pacing
Seventy minutes for 44 questions works out to about 95 seconds per question — slightly more generous than the old test. But averages lie. The right approach is a two-pass method within each module:
- First pass: answer everything you can do confidently in under a minute. Flag anything that would eat time and move on.
- Second pass: return to your flagged questions with the time you've banked. Now you can afford to slow down on the hard ones.
The mistake I see constantly is a student burning four minutes on question 6, then rushing questions 18 through 22 — which might include easy points they'd normally nail. Every question is worth the same. Protect the easy points first.
How to actually prepare
Here's the sequence I give students, in order:
- Diagnose. Take one full timed practice test before you study anything. You need to know which domain is bleeding points.
- Learn the concept, then drill it. Read the relevant guide, then hammer the matching question bank until the pattern is automatic. Reading alone doesn't stick.
- Review every miss. The fastest gains come from understanding why you got something wrong, not from doing more new questions. Keep a short log of your recurring mistake types.
- Simulate. Once a week, take a full timed test and convert your raw score with the score calculator. Track the trend.
- Follow a schedule. If you want the whole thing sequenced day by day, use the 4- and 8-week study plans.
That loop — diagnose, learn, drill, review, simulate — is the entire game. Everything else is detail.

What is a good score on Digital SAT Math?
The math section is scored 200–800. Around 500 is roughly the national median, 600 is solidly above average, 700+ is competitive at selective schools, and 750–800 is expected for math-heavy programs at the most competitive colleges. Always check the middle-50% range for your target schools.
Does the second module really change based on the first?
Yes. Module 1 has a fixed mix of difficulty. Your performance on it routes you to either a harder or an easier Module 2, and only the harder track lets you reach the top of the score range. That is why accuracy on Module 1 matters more than anything else.
