Most students who "study hard" for the SAT and don't improve made the same error: they did a lot of random practice with no structure. They'd open a problem set, do 30 questions, feel productive, and never find out that 20 of those 30 were on topics they already knew. Effort isn't the problem. Direction is. A good study plan points your effort at the exact places that are costing you points — and gets out of the way everywhere else.
Three principles that make a plan work
- Diagnose before you drill. You can't fix a weakness you haven't measured. The plan always starts with a full timed test, not a topic.
- Weight your time by the test's weighting. Algebra and Advanced Math are ~70% of the section. Your calendar should reflect that, not spread hours evenly across four domains.
- Learn, drill, review — in that order, every time. Read the concept, practice it, then study your mistakes. Skipping the review step is the most common reason scores plateau.
The core loop
Every week of every plan below is the same loop: learn a concept, drill it in the question bank, take a timed section, and review every miss. The plans just tell you which concept, in what order.
Week zero: diagnose first
Before day one of studying, take one full practice test under real conditions — timed, no phone, no breaks beyond the real ones. Then convert your raw score with the score calculator and, crucially, look at the topic breakdown. You're answering one question: which domain lost me the most points?
Write down your per-domain results. That single sheet of paper decides your whole plan. A student missing eight algebra questions and two geometry questions should spend the opposite of equal time on those domains.
Say your first test comes back like this: Algebra 12/16, Advanced Math 8/16, Geometry 5/6, Data 5/6.
Reading it: Geometry and Data are already strong (10/12). The bleeding is in Advanced Math (8/16) and, secondarily, Algebra. Your plan: front-load Advanced Math and shore up Algebra; leave Geometry and Data for a light touch-up near the end. That's a plan built from evidence, not guesswork.
The 8-week plan
This is the version I recommend when you have the runway. Budget 3–5 hours a week, split across at least three sessions.
- Week 1 — Diagnostic & Linear Foundations. Take the diagnostic test. Then start linear equations: isolating variables, slope forms, word problems. Drill the algebra question bank.
- Week 2 — Systems & Inequalities. Two-equation systems, substitution vs. elimination, the no-solution and infinite-solution cases, linear inequalities. Keep drilling algebra.
- Week 3 — Quadratics. Read mastering quadratic equations. Factoring, the quadratic formula, vertex form, the discriminant. Start the advanced math bank.
- Week 4 — Functions & Exponentials. Function notation, transformations, exponential growth and decay, polynomial behavior. Take a mid-prep timed section and re-check your domain breakdown.
- Week 5 — Problem-Solving & Data. Ratios, percentages, unit conversion, probability, reading graphs and tables, mean/median, standard deviation concepts. Drill the data & statistics bank.
- Week 6 — Geometry & Trig. Read SAT geometry formulas. Angles, triangles, circles, area/volume, SOH-CAH-TOA. Drill the geometry bank.
- Week 7 — Full Tests & Weak-Spot Repair. Take two full timed tests. Use your miss log to return to whichever domain is still soft. This is also the week to master Desmos.
- Week 8 — Simulation & Polish. One final full test early in the week, then light review of common mistakes. Taper off. Rest the day before.
The 4-week plan (crunch)
When the test is a month out, you can't cover everything at leisure. Compress by doubling up and cutting the lowest-weight topics.
- Week 1 — Diagnostic + all of Algebra. Test, then linear equations, systems, and inequalities in one intense week. Algebra is 35% of the section; earn it back first.
- Week 2 — All of Advanced Math. Quadratics, functions, exponentials, nonlinear systems. Take a timed section at week's end.
- Week 3 — Data, Geometry & Desmos. Cover the two smaller domains together and learn the high-value Desmos moves that save time across the whole test.
- Week 4 — Full tests + mistake review. Two full timed tests, heavy review of every miss, and a read-through of tips and tricks. Taper the last two days.
If you have even less time
With one week left, don't try to learn new content — you'll just add anxiety. Instead, take one test, review it hard, and drill only your single weakest topic. A focused week on one weakness beats a scattered week on five.
What a single study session looks like
A good 45–60 minute session has a shape. Here's the one I hand students:
- 5 min — warm up. Redo two problems you got wrong last session. This forces the correction to stick.
- 15 min — learn. Read the day's concept and work the guide's examples with a pencil, not just your eyes.
- 25 min — drill. Do a focused set on that exact topic. Timed, but not rushed.
- 10 min — review. For every miss, write one sentence: what went wrong and what the fix is. This log is gold.
The review habit that actually moves scores
If you take one thing from this guide, take this: the point of a practice question is the review, not the answer. Getting a question right teaches you little. Getting one wrong — and then understanding precisely why — is where the score gain lives.
Keep a running "mistake log." Every wrong answer gets one line: the topic, the specific error (dropped a negative, misread the question, didn't know the formula), and the correction. After two weeks you'll see patterns. Maybe half your misses are careless sign errors, not knowledge gaps — which means the fix is a checking habit, not more studying. Frequently asked questions
How long should I study for SAT Math?
For most students, 6 to 8 weeks of consistent work — around 3 to 5 hours a week — produces a meaningful score jump. If your test is closer, a focused 4-week plan still works if you protect your practice time. Cramming the last two days does almost nothing.
How many practice tests should I take?
Aim for one full timed math section per week, plus targeted drilling in between. Four to eight full tests over a prep cycle is a healthy range. More important than the count is reviewing every test thoroughly — a test you do not review is a wasted test.
Should I study every topic or just my weak ones?
Start with your weakest high-weight domains. Algebra and Advanced Math are about 70% of the section, so weaknesses there cost the most. Only after those are solid should you spend equal time polishing Geometry and Data Analysis.
How much can I realistically raise my SAT Math score?
A 50 to 100 point gain over a well-run 8-week plan is common and realistic for a motivated student. Larger jumps happen, usually when a student starts with fixable weaknesses like careless errors or a shaky grasp of linear equations rather than deep conceptual gaps.
Is studying a little every day better than one long session?
Yes, clearly. Four 45-minute sessions across a week beat one 3-hour cram. Spaced practice is how math skills become automatic, and automaticity is exactly what you need under the test clock.
